Ammalife is pleased to be receiving donations from Kimal, who manufacture a drape designed to improve maternal health

Postpartuim haemorrhage (PPH) is the most common reason for death after childbirth globally. Every day, 200 mothers will die from PPH. It can be difficulty to assess blood loss, and so without accurate detection of PPH, treatment will be missed.

In 2023, University of Birmingham published an incredibly important piece of research with financial support from Ammalife. The research highlighted a significant benefit in maternal health with early identification and prompt treatment of maternal blood loss. The EMOTIVE bundle involved using a drape to identify PPH which triggered a treatment pathway for it.

The research highlighted how a simple intervention, a plastic drape, can produce a significant benefit to global maternal health. The use of a drape to collect and quantify blood loss allowed for earlier detection of significant blood loss, and this improved prompt action and reduced serious complications by around 60%

Following on from this, Kimal understood its importance and have now begun manufacturing the drape which they have called the ‘Ammalife PPH Detection Drape’. “We saw an opportunity to address a clear clinical need with a simple, practical, evidence-based product” says Stacey Tyler of Kimal. “When a woman is bleeding after birth, clinicians need clear information to help them recognise excessive blood loss and respond. The drape is designed to support exactly that”. Kimal is manufacturing the Ammalife PPH Detection Drape for NHS trusts across the UK, and has pledged a donation to Ammalife with every drape sold in the UK. In September 2026, we received our first donation of £1500

The importance of this product is significant for improving global maternal health, as Imran Pasha, Ammalife’s Chair of Trustees explains: “The Ammalife PPH Detection Drape supports earlier, more accurate recognition of postpartum haemorrhage, helping maternity teams respond faster and improve outcomes for mothers. Evidence from the E-MOTIVE study showed that objectively measuring blood loss with a calibrated drape, alongside recommended treatments, reduced severe bleeding by 60%”

On behalf of Kimal, Stacey Tyler says “We believe every woman deserves to give birth safely, wherever she lives. That’s why we’re proud to support Ammalife and its work to make that a reality for more women and their families. By bringing our manufacturing and commercial experience together with Ammalife’s research and clinical expertise, we can help make a practical, evidence-based product more widely available. It’s a partnership that puts our shared commitment to safer maternity care into practice.”

Imran Pasha celebrates this collaboration as a significant moment for Ammalife: “Our partnership with Kimal brings together maternal health expertise, evidence led innovation and the ability to put practical solutions into the hands of clinicians. For Ammalife, the partnership provides an important route to translate research into real world impact, such as supporting safer maternity care within the NHS while also helping make effective, affordable solutions available to women in lower resource settings around the world.”
