Birth is a Dream is the work of social documentary photographer Paolo Patruno who has worked in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Paolo is a father himself and through his work for aid agencies, he’s become aware of how perilous the beginning of life can be for babies and their mothers. He uses his photographs to draw the world’s attention to the risks so many mothers face in childbirth. His photos, all taken with the consent of mothers, cut below the surface to show the reality that many mothers face. Paolo has very generously allowed Ammalife to use some of his photographs. In addition Ammalife is now part of the Birth is a Dream Network, dedicated to promoting health justice for the 800 mothers who die every day and the many thousands more who are left sick and injured.
